I don't think it possible for man to guide a meteorite. However, NASA might claim they are able to. They may claim to have done it.

The aliens have disarmed all the nukes.

Space aliens might be the next scam used to scare humanity. OR an asteroid.

There's a rumor that Vernon von Braun talked about this.

There was a suggestion that 'nuclear weapons' might be used to blow up asteroids heading for earth - though of course there would be formidable difficulties even if the bombs worked. For example, they move so fast relative to earth that a long lead-time would be needed to launch missiles, and the further away an asteroid is, the harder it is to predict whether in fact it would hit earth. Moreover the energy of the asteroid would be high, so even if such a thing were to be blown into pieces, the centre of gravity of the bits would continue on much the same trajectory, so earth might simply be attacked by a sort of giant shotgun rather than a giant shell.

I think the scientists KNOW that nuke bombs destroying asteroids would be worthless, EVEN assuming nuke bombs worked, on account of the fact that nothing would be achieved. Instead of a large meteorite headed for Earth, there would be a lot of smaller ones. But the whole point is to bring nuke bombs into the public consciousness. Don't forget, with the Cold War over, fewer people are talking about nuke bombs, and they might fade from the public consciousness.

I also bet that the discussion of asteroids hitting the Earth is exaggerated, and another scare tactic. The purpose is so that the public will regard the government as very important, and they will want to fund NASA and the military industrial complex. Ultimately, America's powerful military benefits Israel.
