New York's Indian Point 'nuclear power reactor'

Postby rerevisionist » 20 Apr 2011 10:17

About fifty miles from New York, depending of course on which bits you mean. Googling, or of course Binging, reveals a lot of scare stories about it. I sometimes wonder how much affect continual media bullshit has on the mental health of modern large populations. Anyway, I don't have anything specific to say about it here - this is just a marker for peoples' comments.

The last question is whether putting inherently dangerous nukes into mostly black Burke County, GA amounts to environmental racism. I asked Clark Atlanta University’s Dr. Robert Bullard, director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center and the man who first coined the term “environmental racism” to characterize the frequent placement of toxic and dangerous industrial facilities into minority communities. This is what he told us:

The siting of risky nuclear power plants in Shell Bluff community in Burke County is consistent with the environmental racism pattern I documented in Dumping in Dixie some two decades ago. In Georgia, there are currently three coal fired power plants proposed for mostly black and poor communities with the promise of jobs. In reality, fence-line black community residents don’t get the jobs. They get pollution and more poverty. And they get sick.

Niggers are never happy.

It sounds like a national analogy to such things as shiploads of toxic waste being dumped in African countries. It's hard to judge the black race thing. It's true their achievements are negligible, but possibly they've had the equivalent of being dosed with fluoride and kidnapped by foreigners since time immemorial. The Arab slave traders must have been at it long before Muhammad. Also Africa, like the Asian steppes and N American prairies, hasn't much defensible space (as far as I know - big generalisation). Unlike Europe, which is split up into nation-sized chunks by mountain ranges, the sea, snow barriers.
